Happy Passover! This is the Jewish holiday that commemorates the Jews being freed from slavery in Egypt some 3,500 years ago. During the holiday, we have all kinds of fun observances, including eating matzoh (unleavened bread) and all kinds of other wonderful foods like charoset, an apple/nut/cinnamon/wine mix that is meant to symbolize the mortar used by the Israelite slaves when they laid bricks for Pharaoh’s monuments. On the first two nights of the holiday, we have a ritual meal called a seder where, believe it or not, we are supposed to drink four glasses of wine! When I was a child, those four glasses were sweet, syrupy Manischewitz concord grape wine. Thankfully, as an adult, I’ve gotten to enjoy many wonderful Passover wines. They probably existed when I was a kid, but my family was really into the tradition of sweet alcoholic juice.

One of the many blessings of Hanukkah is the foods we eat: latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). The common theme of these two foods is oil, which ties closely to the Hanukkah miracle where a vat of oil that was only supposed to last a day lasted eight days – enough time for more oil to be found to light the synagogue. Today, we’re going to look at Hanukkah wine pairings. We’ll focus on which wines go best with latkes and sufganiyot. Thank you to Food&Wine, JustWineApp, Tablet and Israel21C for their help with this article.

The Holidays in Lockdown Mode? Yes!
This week, CA went into total lockdown. We’re only allowed to leave our homes to go to the grocery store, the post office or the doctor. Very sad, given that we’re in holiday season. But it’s what we need to do. The capacity in CA hospitals’ ICUs is dangerously low. The plan was that when the capacity went below 15%, we would go into lockdown. The lockdown is expected to last through Jan. 4. So, the big question is what can we do to have fun this holiday season.
